An Introduction to Sound Healing
What it is, where it comes from, and why it works
Sound healing is an ancient yet increasingly recognized therapeutic practice that uses vibration, frequency, and sound to support the body, mind, and nervous system. While it may feel like a modern wellness trend, sound healing has been used for thousands of years across many cultures, from Tibetan singing bowls and gongs, to Indigenous drumming, chanting, and mantra practices in India and Egypt.
At its core, sound healing works with the understanding that everything is vibration … including the human body.
How Sound & Vibration Affect the Body
Our bodies are made up of water (about 60–70%), and water is an amazing conductor of sound. When sound waves move through the body, they gently ripple through our tissues, organs, and energy systems, helping to release tension, restore balance, and bring the nervous system out of “fight or flight” and into a state of rest and repair.
From a scientific perspective, studies have shown that certain sound frequencies can:
-
Shift brainwaves from beta (active thinking) into alpha and theta states (deep relaxation, meditation, and creativity)
-
Reduce stress hormones like cortisol
-
Support nervous system regulation
-
Improve mood, emotional regulation, and overall sense of wellbeing
Research on sound meditation and singing bowl therapy has demonstrated measurable reductions in anxiety, tension, anger, and fatigue, while increasing feelings of calm and clarity. Sound has also been studied for its effects on heart rate variability, breath regulation, and vagus nerve stimulation, which are all key components of stress resilience and healing.
In simple terms: sound gives the body a signal that it is safe to soften.
What Happens During a Sound Healing Session?
During a sound healing session, I use instruments such as singing bowls, gongs, tuning forks, chimes, drums, or my human voice to intentionally create layers of sound and vibration. Rather than “doing” anything, the client simply rests and receives.
The sounds act as an anchor for the mind, helping thoughts slow down, while the vibrations work on a deeper level, often reaching places that talk therapy or conscious effort cannot.
Many people describe sound healing as feeling like:
-
A deep nervous system reset
-
A meditative journey without needing to “try”
-
A release of emotional or physical tension
-
A sense of being grounded, supported, and present
The Benefits of Sound Healing
Sound healing can support:
-
Stress, anxiety, and overwhelm
-
Difficulty relaxing or quieting the mind
-
Emotional processing and release
-
Nervous system regulation
-
Sleep quality and restfulness
-
Feeling disconnected from the body or self
It is not about “fixing” anything .. but about remembering balance.
Who Is Sound Healing For?
Sound healing is for anyone who:
-
Feels overstimulated, burnt out, or overwhelmed
-
Spends a lot of time in their head and wants to reconnect with their body
-
Is moving through emotional transitions or life changes
-
Wants a gentle, non-invasive form of support
-
Is curious about holistic or integrative healing approaches
You don’t need to believe in anything specific for sound healing to work. You simply need to show up and allow yourself to receive.
A Gentle Reminder
Sound healing doesn’t replace medical or psychological care, but it can beautifully complement it. It offers a space where the body can soften, the mind can rest, and the inner world can come back into harmony.
Sometimes healing isn’t about effort…
it’s about resonance.
